The book is made to be read with the binding upwards, turning the pages from down to up.
This emphasises the animals’ progress.
The idea for this book came from our competitive society, from this obsession always to come first. In the sports world, it’s even more striking: number two is worth nothing, although he or she is only fractions of a second behind number one.
In my first sketches, the book was called "Race to the Top", but it was too abstract a title for children. I quickly gave it up for "Always Higher" (see sketches). But since the title had already been used by the publishing house, it became "Up on Top".
